About Tech Dads Life

Mike at CES, Las Vegas

A dad. Three kids. An unhealthy interest in gadgets.

My name’s Mike. I’m a father of three, a lifelong tech enthusiast, and the kind of person who reads the spec sheet before the kids have finished unwrapping the box.

Tech Dads Life exists because most tech coverage is written for the wrong person. It’s aimed at developers, early adopters, or people with a limitless budget and unlimited time to tinker. That’s not me, and I’m guessing it’s not you either.

I write for people who love technology but also have a packed school run, a mortgage, and approximately 40 minutes of quiet time per week. People who want an honest answer to “is this actually worth buying?” without wading through fourteen comparison sites and a sponsored YouTube video.

What We Cover

Artificial Intelligence — Not the sci-fi version, the real one. The tools that actually save you time, the ones that are overhyped, and the ones worth keeping an eye on for next year.

Tech Bench — New phones, TVs, consoles, smart home gear, and wearables. Honest reviews and buying guides at real-world prices. If it’s worth your money, I’ll say so. If it isn’t, I’ll say that too.

Watts and Wheels — Electric vehicles, home solar, DIY power generation, and energy independence. Tesla, BYD, heat pumps, batteries. The future of getting around and keeping the lights on.

3D Printing — Printers, filament, projects, and things you can actually make at home. A passion project that’s slowly taking over the garage.

How To — Step-by-step guides for everyday tech problems. Things I’ve found confusing myself, explained in plain English so you don’t have to spend an afternoon on forums.

Unplugged — BBQs, family days out, travel, and road trips. Because even a tech dad needs to step away from the screen occasionally.

CES — I’ve been attending the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas for over a decade, with around eight trips under my belt. I go as credentialed media every year. The hits, the misses, the stuff that never ships, and the trends that will actually matter for your family twelve months later – I’ve seen enough to know the difference.

The Draw — The junk drawer. Random finds, interesting things that don’t fit neatly anywhere else, and the odds and sods that catch my eye.

Why Trust Me?

I don’t take money to recommend products. Some pages may include affiliate links, and if you buy through them Tech Dads Life may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. That never influences what I write. If something isn’t worth your money, I’ll say so.

I’ve been covering tech long enough to remember when “AI” meant autocorrect, when smart speakers were a novelty, and when every gadget came with a fistful of proprietary cables. That context matters. It’s easy to be impressed by something new. It’s harder — and more useful — to know whether it will still be relevant in two years.

The best way to follow along is the weekly newsletter, sent every Thursday via Beehiiv. It’s a curated read: the week’s most interesting tech stories, a frank verdict on whatever the internet is hyping, and occasionally a dad joke I’m not sorry about.

About Mike

Dad of three, tech enthusiast, and the person who reads the spec sheet before the kids finish unwrapping. I cover the gear, gadgets, and ideas that actually matter to families, without the hype. I go to CES every year so you don't have to, and I try to be clear about what I've used, what I've researched, and what I would actually spend money on.
