Chatbots are by far the most popular tool, with 60% of students using them. ChatGPT leads the pack at 53%, though Google Gemini more than doubled its share to 28% over the same period. What are they actually doing with these tools? The top uses are getting better explanations of assignments (38%), brainstorming ideas (35%), looking up facts (33%), and drafting or revising writing (33%).

Here’s the interesting bit. When you ask students whether using AI is cheating, most of them say no, at least for things like brainstorming and fact-checking. The exception? Getting direct answers to homework. Even among students, 45% consider that cheating. And 67% of students now agree that the more they use AI for schoolwork, the more it harms their critical thinking skills. That number jumped over 10 percentage points in just ten months. Kids aren’t oblivious to the risks. They’re just not sure where the guardrails are, either.

What Schools Actually Expect in 2026

This is where it gets properly complicated, because the answer depends entirely on which school your child attends.

In the UK

The Department for Education hasn’t banned AI in schools. Quite the opposite. Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson has called AI potentially “the biggest boost for education in the last 500 years,” and the government has invested £23 million to expand its EdTech testbed programme. But here’s the catch: it’s up to individual schools and colleges to decide whether and how students can use AI. The DfE’s guidance says schools need proper safeguards, close supervision, tools with safety and filtering features, and adherence to age restrictions (many AI tools are technically 18+).

For GCSEs and A-Levels, the Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) has some of the clearest rules. Students can use AI-generated content as a source, but they cannot copy it and present it as their own. If they do use AI, they must reference the tool by name, record the date, keep screenshots of the prompts and outputs, and explain how the content was used. All of that has to be submitted alongside the final work. In other words, using AI isn’t forbidden, but passing off AI output as your own absolutely is.

And this is evolving fast. As recently as April 2026, Ofqual chief Ian Bauckham warned that scrapping extended-writing coursework components over AI cheating fears is “never off the table.” That could reshape how English and history A-Levels are assessed from 2027 onwards.

In the US

The picture is similarly fragmented. Policies vary district by district, sometimes school by school. The broad trend mirrors the UK: a shift from outright bans towards guided, transparent use. But there’s no single federal standard, so if you’re reading from the US side, your best bet is checking directly with your child’s school for their specific AI policy.

The Line Between Learning and Cheating (In Plain English)

After spending far too long reading policy documents and research papers, I’ve landed on a simple framework that works at our dinner table. It comes down to one question: Did you learn something, or did the AI learn it for you?

Here’s how that plays out in practice:

Probably fine:

  • Asking AI to explain a concept you don’t understand (“Explain the causes of the French Revolution like I’m 13”)
  • Using it to brainstorm essay structure ideas before writing
  • Checking your own work for grammar or clarity
  • Generating practice questions on a topic you’re revising

Probably not fine:

  • Pasting in an essay question and submitting what comes back
  • Getting AI to solve maths problems and copying the answers without working through the method
  • Using AI to write a first draft that you then lightly edit and call your own

The grey area sits in the middle, and that’s where family conversations matter most. One thing worth knowing: AI detection tools are unreliable. Schools often use platforms like Turnitin, which has been specifically designed for education and reports low false-positive rates. But even Turnitin itself warns against using its AI detection as the sole basis for an accusation. Half of students surveyed said they worry about being falsely accused of using AI to cheat. That’s a real concern, and it means honest, documented use is far safer than trying to hide it.

Should You Actually Care About This Right Now?

Yes, without question. This isn’t a future problem. Over 60% of students are already using AI for schoolwork, UK exam bodies are actively rewriting assessment rules around it, and your child’s school may or may not have communicated their policy clearly. If you don’t set expectations at home, the defaults get set by whatever their mates are doing at lunch.

Setting Household Rules That Actually Work

You don’t need to become an AI expert overnight. You just need a few clear principles and the willingness to revisit them as things change.

1. Start with your school’s policy. Check the website, email the teacher, ask at parents’ evening. Find out what’s explicitly allowed and what isn’t, especially for coursework and exams. If the school doesn’t have a clear policy yet, that’s useful to know too, because it means you need your own.

2. Make AI use visible, not secret. The JCQ approach is actually a solid model for home use: if your child uses AI, they should be able to show you what they asked, what came back, and what they did with it. No screenshots needed at the kitchen table, but the principle of transparency matters. If they’d be uncomfortable showing you the prompt, that’s a red flag.

3. Try it together. Sit down with your child and use ChatGPT or Claude on a homework topic. See what it produces. Talk about what’s useful, what’s wrong (because it will get things wrong), and what’s missing. This turns AI from a secret shortcut into a shared learning tool. I’ve done this with my boys and it genuinely sparks better conversations about the actual subject matter than the homework alone ever did.

4. Focus on the process, not just the output. If your child can explain their essay argument back to you without looking at it, they’ve learned something, regardless of whether AI helped them get there. If they can’t, there’s a problem, regardless of whether AI was involved.

The technology isn’t going back in the box. Our kids will use AI throughout their careers in ways we can’t fully predict yet. The goal isn’t to ban it.
