There is a photo somewhere, buried in a box in the loft, of me leaning against an Alfa Romeo Sprint 1.5 Veloce looking extremely pleased with myself. I was in Johannesburg, I was young, and that car was my entire personality. It had a flat-four aluminium block, twin carburettors, and a wiring loom that I had completely redone from scratch. Partly because I genuinely wanted to, and partly because the original one had a habit of catching fire. Which, as you can imagine, focuses the mind.

That Alfa taught me things no manual ever could. I pulled the engine apart to rebuild it after getting the timing belt wrong following a water pump swap. An expensive lesson, but one that stuck. Then came a Honda Civic that I modified to Group N racing standards before it was stolen, which remains genuinely gutting to think about. But the modifications I remember most fondly were the audio builds. Big sound, big bass, dual subs, 6x9s, four mid-range drivers, tweeters, multiple amplifiers. I rebuilt the door panels from scratch just to fit everything in properly. The kind of project that takes over your evenings, your weekends, and eventually your dining room table.

Why did I do it? Honestly, it was about putting my stamp on something. Making it mine. There is a French phrase, “je ne sais quoi,” that captures it well, that indefinable quality that makes something feel like it belongs to you and nobody else. The car became an extension of who I was, and the process of building it was just as satisfying as the result.

The Obsession With Specs Is Identical

If you have spent any time around car modification communities, you will recognise something immediately: the research never stops. Forum threads running to forty pages about the best intercooler for a specific engine configuration. Heated arguments about whether a particular brand of coilover is worth the premium over the budget option. Spreadsheets comparing dyno results across three different ECU maps. Sound familiar?

It is exactly the same as tech culture. Swap “intercooler” for “GPU,” swap “ECU remap” for “BIOS undervolt,” and you are reading the same conversation. The same obsessive attention to marginal gains. The same community of people who could talk about a very specific and obscure topic for three hours without drawing breath. I have sat in front of forums comparing latency figures on RAM kits at midnight when I should have been asleep, and I spent just as long in my twenties reading about speaker impedance matching and amplifier bridging configurations. The hardware changes, but the behaviour is the same.

The global car modification market sits somewhere in the region of $58 to $61 billion and is growing steadily. That is not a hobbyist curiosity. That is a serious global industry, and the UK is one of the strongest modification markets in Europe. What is interesting, and what often gets missed in the “boy racer” stereotype, is who is actually doing the modifying. Research suggests the most active demographic in the UK is the 45 to 54 and 55 to 64 age brackets, each accounting for roughly a quarter of all modification activity. These are people with experience, disposable income, and years of accumulated knowledge. People who have been doing this long enough to know exactly what they want and why.

Community Forums, Car Meets, and the Tech Parallel

I run a Plex server at home. I have built local AI setups using self-hosted language models. I have built drones and 3D printers from kits and from scratch. And without exception, every single one of those projects was made better by community. Forums, Discord servers, Reddit threads, YouTube build logs, people sharing their mistakes so others do not have to repeat them.

Car modification culture invented this model long before the internet existed. The community aspect has always been central, with car meets and shows and club forums where people share builds, swap advice, and celebrate each other’s work. The camaraderie is genuine and earned. It is not performative enthusiasm. It is the shared language of people who have spent real time and real money on something they care about.

Social media accelerated this for both communities. The rise of build threads on Instagram and YouTube made it possible to share a project in progress with a global audience, draw inspiration from people on the other side of the world, and get genuinely useful feedback in hours rather than weeks. EV modification has even started to blur the line between car culture and tech culture directly. Digital tuning for electric vehicles now involves software modification, coding, overclocking, and a working knowledge of electrical engineering. The person doing that work is as much a software enthusiast as they are a gearhead.

Both Are Really About Personalisation

The deeper thing that connects car modification and tech enthusiasm is not the specs or the community, though those matter. It is the underlying drive to take something generic and make it yours.

When I built that car audio system in my Honda Civic, I was not trying to impress anyone else. I was building something that reflected my taste, my priorities, my idea of what a car should sound and feel like. When I set up my home network with Deco mesh nodes and Starlink Mini for a backup connection, or print a custom bracket on the Bambu Lab P2S because the off-the-shelf option does not quite fit, the motivation is identical. It is the same instinct behind 3D printing your own car mods rather than buying whatever’s on the shelf. Control. Personalisation. The satisfaction of something working exactly the way you decided it should.

Hype Cycle Check

LIKELY TO LAST: The core of both communities, the obsessive research, the community forums, the drive to personalise and improve, is not going anywhere. These behaviours are deeply human and have survived every technology shift thrown at them.

WATCH CLOSELY: EV modification is the emerging frontier. As more people move to electric vehicles, the community is adapting. Digital tuning, software unlocks, and performance coding are becoming the new ECU remap. This will grow significantly over the next few years and will pull in a new generation of enthusiasts who are comfortable with code as well as hardware.

VAPOURWARE RISK: The idea that Gen Z will drive the next wave of car modification. Research suggests around 69% would consider it, but only about 15% have actually done it. Enthusiasm without action is just aspiration. Watch whether that translates as they get older and gain disposable income.

What This Means for CES 2027

Car tech has been a growing presence at CES for years, but the conversation is shifting from connected features and autonomous driving to performance and personalisation. I would expect CES 2027 to bring more aftermarket software platforms, EV tuning tools with consumer-facing interfaces, and connected audio and interior technology that speaks directly to the modification market. The line between car builder and home tech builder is getting thinner every year. I fully expect to see something at the Las Vegas Convention Centre next January that makes me think of that Honda Civic.

What to Watch

  • EV tuning platforms - watch for software-based performance tools that bring ECU-style tuning to electric vehicles in a more accessible, app-driven format
  • Aftermarket audio evolution - high-res audio and spatial sound are moving into the car aftermarket, and the next generation of in-car builds will sound extraordinary
  • AI-assisted modification planning - community tools using AI to recommend compatible parts and flag common mistakes are already emerging and will mature quickly
  • UK insurance and modifications - the regulatory environment around modified cars and insurance disclosure is worth watching as EVs change the landscape

Car modification culture and tech enthusiasm are, at their core, the same thing wearing different clothes. Both are built on curiosity, community, and the stubborn belief that the factory setting is just a starting point. The people who spend their weekends pulling apart an engine or rewiring a door panel are the same people who stay up too late configuring a home server or building something they probably could have just bought.

I lost the Honda. I moved on from the Alfa. But I have never lost the habit of mind that both of those cars built in me. The idea that things are better when they are yours, properly yours, made that way through effort and knowledge and a bit of stubbornness. Both communities understand that. And that, I think, is why both of them matter.
